Soul Surfer- Bethany Hamilton

Soul Surfer is a phrase used to describe a surfer who does surfing because of the love they have for the sport. Everyone has something that they love and put their heart and soul into, say if it was netball, tennis, blogging or even academic work. The name Soul Surfer was mentioned to Bethany by her dad and the phrase just stuck so she used it for her book.

She quoted “ For me Soul Surfing is just being passionate about the ocean and surfing. That’s what I am. I am passionate about being out there and enjoying God’s Creation.

But even after Bethany lost her left arm in at shark attack in 2003 at the age of only thirteen she continued to do what she loved surfing. And a couple weeks after the incident she got back into surfing and was determined to learn to surf again, she had to kick more and the right arm had to a lot of work and she had to use a bigger board so she could balance but she got it and only about 3 weeks later she entered a major surf competition.

In 2004 she wrote a book about her story which became a #1 New York Times Bestseller and then years later she made a documentary about her love for the ocean named “Heart and Soul Surfer”. Bethany’s story hit the big screen on the 8th of April 2011 staring Anna Sophia Robb. The film quickly became the #1 grossing Live Action Surfing Film at the box office and was awarded with several accolades and great ratings. Now she is 25 and still out in the water and following her dreams as a surfer. Now days she is a internet sensation appearing and talking about her experiences on many different TV shows like Sunrise Australia and The Biggest Loser. I personally think all should know the inspirational story of Bethany and her fight to get back on the board.
